Speech Communication, AA (Major Code 1506)

The basic philosophy of speech is rooted in the function of effective oral communication in our society. As a field of study, it is concerned with the development of effective interpersonal, group facilitation, and public speaking skills.

Courses in speech are offered to provide instruction to students who are: 1.) preparing for careers in the communication fields; 2.) preparing to teach; 3.) seeking to satisfy the General Education requirement for a course in oral communications; and/or 4.) pursuing the study of communications for personal enrichment.

The following curriculum prepares students for transfer to a university for completion of a baccalaureate degree in speech communication. The curriculum meets all requirements of the Associate of Arts degree.

Program advisors are Natalie Bryant, assistant professor of speech communication, Julie Gerstenberger, associate professor of speech communication, and Janna Holt-Day, assistant professor of speech communication.

*Although not a requirement for this degree, students are strongly encouraged to take HUDV 1100 during the first semester of enrollment.
