Program Overview
This 15-month Associate of Applied Science degree program prepares students as competent entry-level Surgical Technologists, providing the knowledge, technical skills, and professional behaviors necessary to function effectively in the surgical environment.
Role of the Surgical Technologist
Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the surgical team and work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive procedures. They maintain a sterile environment, ensure proper function of surgical equipment, and support optimal patient outcomes while applying principles of sterile and aseptic technique.
Accreditation
This program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in cooperation with the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
Program Completion and Certification
Upon successful completion of the curriculum, including a Capstone Experience in the final semester, students are awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree. Graduates are eligible for review by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting to sit for the national certification examination.
Admission Requirements
Admission to South Plains College does not guarantee admission to the Surgical Technology Program. Applicants must complete all college admission requirements, submit a program-specific application during the designated period, and provide required entrance exam scores prior to the deadline.
